In anticipation of a new appointment, Texas Appraiser Licensing and Certification Board Chair Sara Oates opened the Board’s November 15 meeting with some parting words before the expiration of her term:

“Part of the reason why I do feel like it’s time for me to go because I think that with new leadership there is new energy, there are new, fresh eyes on things, and I think, for an oversight board, that’s important thing.”

There's a shortage of appraiser supervisors for prospective appraiser trainees, which means it’s hard for more appraisers to make headway in the industry. The graduates are trickling in nine months after the first ever launch of the Practical Applications of Real Estate Appraisal (PAREA). It took off commanded by the Appraisal Institute (AI). Sticking the landing as the first person to complete PAREA is a stay-at-home dad in San Antonio named Chris Tindal (pictured, left). PAREA Update: 6 Days Until First Launch

The highly anticipated rollout of the first Practical Applications of Real Estate Appraisal (PAREA) program is now around the corner. After three years of development and one test release, the Appraisal Institute (AI) team says they are ready to release a licensed residential module.

“I have not heard of any glitches or significant problems, so all indications are that things are moving along pretty well,” said Scott DiBiasio, AI state & industry affairs manager.

There is more demand than supply. Hands-on experience is a requirement to become a real property appraiser, however the Texas Appraiser Licensing & Certification Board (TALCB) has fielded numerous calls from appraiser trainees expressing frustration over there not being enough resources for them to fulfill experience requirements.

The Texas Appraiser Licensing & Certification Board (TALCB) understands that becoming a licensed appraiser can be difficult. Minimum federal requirements consist of hundreds of hours of education, thousands of hours of experience, and an exam; also, each state has a right to impose its own requirements. TALCB does not want to make it any harder on aspiring appraisers to get licensed, especially when the industry is facing an appraiser shortage and a lack of diversity.
